Introduction
In the years following the Wars of Independence, political alliances continued to shift and change. The charters in our exhibit can provide insight into some of these prominent relationships and networks, most notably those pertaining to the Menzies and the Campbells of Loch Awe, as well as their relationship with the crown. The charters in our collection can reveal who was in favour with the king and who was at risk of being disinherited. Additionally, they can also give us insight into the growing importance of "trust in writing" and the use of notaries and witness lists which can tell historians a lot about the political affiliations of the period.
