The Wars of Scottish Independence were a series of battles fought by Scotland in order to develop its independence from England. They can be split into two different wars. The English invasion of Scotland in 1296 is what kickstarted the first war, which lasted 32 years until the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton brought an end to the war in 1328. The second war began four years later with the invasion led by Edward Balliol and the 'Disinherited'. This war lasted for 29 years, and ended with the Treaty of Berwick in 1357. Both wars ended with Scotland maintaining its independence.

The charters in our collection reveal a lot about these wars as well as those who fought in them, specifically the issues with divided loyalties.
